Newsletter: Sexual Assault and Homelessness Intertwined

By WaTasha Barnes Griffin

Sexual assault and homelessness are deeply interconnected issues, with each exacerbating the other. While precise statistics on the percentage of sexual assault survivors who experience homelessness vary, numerous studies highlight a significant overlap between these populations.

A study by the American Bar Association indicates that 38 percent of domestic violence victims become homeless at some point in their lives. In fact, more than 90 percent of homeless women have experienced severe physical or sexual abuse at some point in their lives.

These findings underscore the pervasive nature of violence in the histories of homeless women.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and gives us a chance to reflect on why the issue requires the work of organizations like YWCA Central Indiana. The women who come here are out of choices and we wrap our arms around them and give them the support they need to move forward.

Often, it is the children who suffer most.

Research indicates that 21-42 percent of homeless youth report sexual abuse, a stark contrast to the 1-3 percent prevalence in the general youth population.

This disparity highlights the critical need for targeted interventions to protect and support young individuals facing both homelessness and the aftermath of sexual violence.

The cyclical nature of trauma and homelessness necessitates comprehensive support systems. Providing stable housing is a crucial step, but addressing the underlying trauma through accessible mental health services is equally important. Our social work staff does this work.

The intersection of sexual assault and homelessness is a complex and pressing issue. We are the only YWCA in Indiana that serves women and their sons. We’re the only YWCA in a six-county region. We’re often the only ones who can help. Period.

Be well.
